It may be difficult for some insects to stand out among all this diversity, but the cicada can.

This fascinating insect is distinguished not only by its unique appearance but also by its loud and characteristic sound.

Because of this uniqueness, learning to draw a cicada can be fun and challenging at the same time.

This is the tutorial you want if you want to focus on the fun aspect!

    How to Draw A Cicada

    Step 1

To begin this guide to drawing a cicada, let’s start with the insect’s head and front legs.

This depiction of a cicada will be fairly close up, meaning a lot of detail and small sections will be packed into this image.

That’s why we’ll take it slow as we break it down into smaller steps for you in this guide!

Start with a few curved lines to create a thin, flat shape for the cicada’s head. There are also two relatively large round eyes on either side of the head.

Add the first small section of the body below the head, and then add some line detail inside.

The front legs of the cicada are quite thin and made up of a few smaller sections. Once the legs are drawn, let’s go to step 2!

    Step 2

In this second phase of your cicada drawing, we will add quite a bit to the insect! Let’s add the main section of the wings first.

These wings begin with small rounded shapes on either edge of the body under the insect’s head. They are very thin at the base but get wider and rounder as you go down.

They will also contain some curvy line details, and we will see the body between them.

Finish by drawing four more skinny legs. Just like the first ones, these legs are drawn in different sections.

    Step 3

To continue this tutorial on how to draw a cicada, let’s add another section to the wings you started in the previous step.

Use curved lines to add rounded sections to the wings as they appear in the reference image.

After drawing, we’ll add some round shapes near the wing tips for extra detail.

You can add sections for the body under and between the wings with some curved lines. Then you are ready for step 4 of the guide!

    Step 4

A cicada’s wings are quite thin and transparent, meaning the body underneath is visible.

We’ll use curved lines to depict the thin sections that form the body’s midsection and extend to the top of the abdomen.

Once you’ve drawn these body details, you can prepare to add some final details in the next step of the guide!

    Step 5

Now you’re ready to complete the last few details as we move on to the fifth step of this how-to guide on how to draw a cicada.

    Draw A Cicada

These details focus mainly on the rear area, just below the head. You can use curved lines to draw these details as they appear in our example.

Once you’ve completed those final details, add elements of your own!

You could draw a background to show this insect’s environment or add other insects to go with it.

These are a few ideas you could come up with. So what will you draw when you graduate?

    Step 6

The cicada isn’t exactly the most colorful insect you’ll find in real life. In our example image for this cicada design, we reflected on this fact by keeping the colors a little more earthy and muted.

    Cicada Drawing

We used different shades of light and dark green for the various details and cutouts of the insect.

For the areas under the wings, we used much lighter shades, as this gives the illusion that the wings are transparent.

When coloring your artwork, you can opt for an equally muted approach to color, but feel free to use any other colors you love instead!

    Your Cicada Drawing is Finished!
